he plans for from the east coast, to the west, oakland appears to be the new epicenter of the occupy movement. the plans for tonight and the shot in the arm that has energized protesters. >> for a second time in two weeks, a member of the hell's angels motorcycle club is laid to rest. and with military honors. how police were staged to help keep the peace. it is the deadliest attack against the u.s. led coalition in afghanistan. 12 americans killed in a suicide attack. good evening, i'm ann notarangelo. it is a bay area occupation that has turned into a rallying cry. commentators, filmmakers, and even protesters abroad have taken notice of occupy oakland. don knapp joins us to explain how the local protest suddenly

captured the local spotlight. >> that's right. and occupy oakland protesters have been meeting and strategizing all day here in front of city hall, again, of course, after being routed from city hall, on tuesday this week. and we know we had about 170 tents back then. let's take a look overhead right now and see what it looks like in front of city hall. not quite as many as the 170 tents we had back then. but a lot of people are back in front of oakland city hall. discussing their strategies. and the big thing on the agenda for tonight. a 6:00 discussion of alleged police brutality obviously in connection with that incident on tuesday. a tent city has sprung up again on oakland city hall's front lawn and speakers' spirits are apparently boosted by occupy oakland's new found status as the national center of attention of the occupy movement. >> missteps by mayor gene quan's administration has helped lift oakland's protest to national prominence and first national coverage of the violence tuesday as police moved to clear an

encampment with canisters and actions that appear to be responsible for seriously injuring the former marine scott olsen. that was followed by an administration's flip-flop that saw protesters and tents welcomed back to city hall. >> it appears to me that there were mistakes probably on both sides by people involved. >> the mayor's apologies and explanations have not helped ease the tensions. michael moore has visited. and national commentary of the white house secretary. and comedian john stewart. helping to pump up the protest. near the may are or police officers were in sight today as occupy oakland protesters planned strategy. yesterday, chief howard jordan defended police actions. >> as the police chief, i am responsible for the actions. i fully support their ability to defend themselves, defend the life and property of citizens that are trying to have a peaceful assembly. >> now, one of the things that

the protesters are doing, as they sit here in front of city hall, and by the way, they won't let us into the encampment area, just into the public areas, they said this is their home, they don't want us in their encampment, and the protesters are talking to one another, and repeating what is being said in order to put some amplification into their words, so that all the people can hear them. now, we do have here, there is another protest planned in march for 8:00 tonight, in connection with the oscar grant committee, and that of course can again protest alleged police brutality. >> ann? >> don knapp in oakland, thank you very much. a change of heart by santa rosa city officials after occupation protesters took up residence at that city hall today. on wednesday, occupy santa rosa announced plans to set up tents in defiance of laws against camping at city hall. and after originally promising a crackdown, the city manager today instructed police not to break up the encampment, at least for now. organizers already have their plans to extend their stay. >> all they've said so far is we

can stay until november 1 which is a big step already, but at the council meeting, the city council meeting on november 1, we are all going to show up and we're going to propose an emergency resolution to get rid of the camping ordinance for our organization. >> city officials say they decided against police intervention after watching violence in oakland erupt earlier in the week. well there is more going on with the occupy movement in san francisco, with the halloween spirit. demonstrators dressed up as what scares them the most. such as a ghost. a goblin. or a quote, greedy banker. and protesters marched down market street in downtown. san francisco police controlled traffic for the protesters. police are also laying the protest camp at justin herman plaza, and remain intact, at least for now. hell's angels member converge on a san jose cemetery to bury a fellow member jot and

killed there, allegedly killed by a fellow rider and police kept a close eye on the funeral. >> reporter: oak hill memorial park is once again open to the public after this memorial service that was without incident, but came with a very heavy police presence. the procession heading to oak hill memorial park stretched as far as the eye could see. and it also could be heard from great distances as well. the body of steve towson, a member of the santa cruz chapter of the hell's angels was carried in a white hearse and the san jose police estimate between 500 and 600 people attended the burial service. he was a very nice gentleman. very good. good father. good provider. good man. >> reporter: earlier, police say about 1,000 people gathered at the jubilee christian center in north san jose. for a private memorial service.

the only visible sign of police were a few squad cars on the main entrance road. but police were stationed on the rooftops of nearby buildings, keeping an eye on the service, and keems of officers were nearby, but out of sight, just in case they were needed. san jose police say there were no problems. >> this time, we still are focusing on the fact that there might be outside groups coming in to cause a problem. we have no credible information that that would occur and we also believe that it wasn't beyond the possibility that there might be persons within the same group. >> oak hill was entirely closed to the public, during the service. but from the air, you could see towson's flag-draped casket being taken out of the hearse by fellow members of the hell's angels and carried to the burial site. he was a former u.s. marine. he was killed at this very same cemetery two weeks ago when he was attending the funeral of jeff pettigrew. the president of the san jose hell's angel chapter. and police say some kind of internal conflict among the hell's angel led to the shooters

and the suspected shooter is still on the run. >> the way that it went down is not a good thing. and it is kind of sad that it had to go that way. steve was a very well known person. very respected amongst the community. and he was a good family man. and i hate to see it do anything to damage the name of the hell's angels. now, as for steve ruiz, police are still looking for him. they believe he is on the run with either a current or an ex-girlfriend. and not only is he a murder suspect, ann, but police say his life is in danger, so they are looking for him and asking for the public's help, if anyone knows where he is, they are very much looking for steve ruiz. >> mark sayer in san jose, thank you. >> the taliban takes responsibility for a deadly blast that killed a dozen americans. the suicide bomber hits a nato bus. how one witness describes what he saw. >> i thought it was christmas time already. >> parts of the east coast

killed 17 people -- including a an attack by a suicide bomber today in afghanistan has killed 17 people including a dozen americans. randall pinkston reports the deadly incident comes as military leaders talk about more participation by afghan security forces. >> a nato bus carrying american soldiers burst into flames. after a suicide bomber rammed a car full of explosives into a military convoy. thick black smoke poured out of the wreckage along a highway in the southwestern section of kabul, afghanistan's capital. >> minutes after the blast, coalition forces surrounded the scene carrying victims to safety while helicopters air lifted injured soldiers to hospitals. this man was not far from the

explosion. >> he says it was a huge blast. i went closer to the convoy and saw several americans on fire. a nato spokesman says at least 12 americans, including u.s. troops and civilian contractors, died in the attack. officials say the blast also killed several afghans. the taliban took responsibility saying the bomb attacked 1500 pounds of explosives into his vehicle. and taliban fighters say they will continue to attack. until all foreign forces leave afghanistan. the attack happened while nato leaders met with afghan officials in kabul. to talk about shifting more control to afghan forces. >> we, at a moment in time where it is time to think about reconciliation, and reintegration, this is not the moment in time to kill innocent people. >> the united nations reports violence in afghanistan is at its worst since the war began 10 years ago. randall pinkston, cbs news, new york. >> new information tonight, about the death of a millipitas

marine killed in afghanistan, earlier this week, a bomb went off while staff sergeant steven dunning was disarming the advice thursday in the hellman province. the 13-year veteran was featured in a 2010 vanity fair photo essay about the war in afghanistan. dunning said he volunteered for the explosive detail because he wanted to live a selfless life. he was 31. flight delays, nearly 2 million people without power, a state of emergency, all because of this. and an unusual october snowstorm, it is not just a dusting. a surprising accumulation total, from areas of the east coast, and what they're expecting. >> while snow flies back east, we continue to languish under this lovely fall pattern and it looks like continued dry and mild through the week. we will take a look at the chilling details coming up in just a few minutes.

eas. record-breaking snowfall. is covering much of the northeast. up to 10 inches in some areas. and drew levinson is out in the elements, in new york central park, where there hasn't been a snowy halloween in decades and drew, i noticed you look cold out there. >> that's because it is cold out here. in the 30s. all day long. and this is really an unusual storm. simply because what you said, it is happening in october. and the big problem associated with this storm is the heavy wet snow. and it is falling on trees, and it is downing trees. just like the one you see behind

me. >> the nor'easter roared up the atlantic seaboard saturday. dumping snow and rain from the mid atlantic states to new england. in western pennsylvania, the snow started coming down early. surprising some. >> i thought it was christmas time already. >> slush and ice coated the roads. causing problems for drivers. >> they were trying to stay on top of it but the biggest problem people didn't want to slow down. >> in new york, it is blocked. >> columbia and yale football players endured near whiteout conditions. >> the snow in times square resembled the confetti that coming down at new years's. colleen and bo knew the storm was coming. >> i knew they were predicting it but i didn't believe there was going to be snow. so now i believe it. >> snow and ice quickly filled the sidewalks. and some looked to the sky in disbelief. that such a storm was hitting before halloween. >> this is already an historic storm. by midday, the snow had already reached the record here in

central park, that was set back in 1925. >> the wet snow is weighing down trees, still full of autumn leaves. tim hewitt and his friend were walking through central park. when police told them to get out. because of falling branches. >> the trees definitely are coming down either side of the road, trees are coming down all the time. >> the forecast in parts of southern new england called for more than a foot of snow. this weekend, the word wicked refers to the weather, rather than the witches and goblins who are due here this halloween. and states of emergencies have already been called in several states here in the northeast. and another big problem, power outages. up wards of a million people are without power in new jersey. 500,000 customers are without electricity tonight. >> drew levinson in new york, thanks for showing us the pictures, and standing out in the cold for us. appreciate it. >> all right. we are so lucky to be here. and meteorologist jim bernard joining us and what we care about is monday, halloween, trick-or-treating and nothing like that. >> nothing like that.

no rain in the forecast either. and as we were looking for a lovely fall weather pattern to continue, dry and mild. and the temperatures across the west coast, here, very another seasonal norms for this time of the year. and they will continue into, if not through next week, and we are looking at a cooler pattern, setting up, thursday and into friday, which could bring a chance of some showers, probably looking more like drizzle than anything else, to the north bay, and across the coastline, and otherwise, we will continue with our dry and mild pattern again through the week here. as we see it is -- boo zoo time for both zoos. mid to low 70s at the zoos. and upper 60s at the beach. tonight, cool locations in the north bay. as we see mid to upper 40s there. back to the bay, it looks like low 50s for most locations. and again, this pattern continuing with a bit of an offshore breeze, keeping the clouds well off the coastline, and mostly clear, and mild temperatures, and lovely weather pattern for the west coast.

it will continue through the week. until as i mentioned thursday or friday. we may see a ripple in this pattern. with the potential for some fog and drizzle appearing on the horizon but nothing to mess with your halloween forecast here, as we see upper 70s to low 80s. through the central valley. and sunshine all the way back to the beach here. and locally, we will have upper 70s, in the warmer locations, around the north bay, and east bay, and south bay. with mid to low 70s at the bay. and upper 60s out at the beach for tomorrow. and that should hold into monday as well. as once again, we will look for this pattern, very lovely fall weather to continue through midweek, and then thursday, into friday, we will see an increase in the cloud cover, and a little bit of drizzle likely at the coast here and chance of showers in the north bay but very slight, these have been missing us the last week or so and i suspect that trend will continue. as we see things warming up again just in time for next weekend. and of course, for the niners tomorrow, we will look for mostly clear, skies with temperatures in the low 70s.
